Molecular Biologist (Environmental Surveillance)

Job Description

Under the overall supervision of the WHO representative, the incumbent is expected to undertake the following duties at the WHO Regional Reference Laboratory for the Polio Eradication Initiative, Department of Virology, National Institute of Health, Islamabad:

  • Characterization and evolutionary tracking of viruses using molecular methods;
  • Development of dendograms of polioviruses and provide comments/feedback on molecular epidemiology to guide the field staff to take actions in targeted population/areas;
  • Share molecular sequencing data with global specialized laboratory and assist other WHO regions in the analysis of molecular sequencing data;
  • Develop plans for future needs of polio molecular biology laboratory according to the needs of polio eradication program;
  • Provide training in molecular methods to laboratory personnel within country and to the staff from WHO Polio Laboratory Network (PLN) including assistance to regional PLN and troubleshooting when-and-where needed;
  • Develop and establish molecular methods for the diagnosis of diseases of public health importance (eg. flu, dengue, measles, etc.);
  • Carry-out and coordinate research for polio end-game strategies in collaboration with other agencies and partners;
  • Quality control procedures in molecular methods;
  • Organization and participation to meetings;
  • Feedback on technical issues and report writing;
  • Any other duties assigned by the supervisor and/or WR.

 

Educational and professional experience:

  • Masters of Philosophy degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry and/or Molecular Biology.
  • At least two year of professional experience of working on molecular biology techniques like PCR, nucleotide sequencing and hybridization for characterization of viruses.
  • Experience of working on PCR machine, nucleotide synthesizer and automated sequencing machine and software applications for molecular biology.

 

Skills Required:

  • Capable of proper application and use of biosafety cabinets, conventional and real-time thermal cycler and genetic analyzer.
  • Demonstrable skills of genetic data analysis of human viral pathogens, especially poliovirus with comprehensive research experience on evolutionary tracking and phylogenetic analysis of viral genomes.
  • Technical expertise in the use of advanced bioinformatics tools used for the understanding and interpretation of viral genomic sequence.
  • Discernable experience of scientific studies preferably in viral diseases of public health concern.
  • Data management skills.
