Pakistan was the sixth country in the world to sign and ratify the Convention on the Rights of the Child, less than one year after it was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1989. However, children and adolescents living in Pakistan still face acute challenges.

UNICEF supports the Government of Pakistan to accelerate progress for children, work to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and help children realize their rights under the Convention on the Rights of Children. This will be made through, among others things, strong partnerships with provincial authorities, teachers and health professionals, frontline workers and social mobilisers, communities and families, and of course the children and adolescents themselves.

In particular, UNICEF will work so that:

  • Every child survives and thrives - being in good health, immunized, protected from polio and accessing nutritious food.
  • Every child learns.
  • Every child is protected from violence and exploitation and registered at birth.
  • Every child lives in a safe and clean environment, with access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation.

Under the supervision of Communication Specialist (Media) and with regular input and strategic direction from the Communication Specialist and the Polio Team lead of UNICEF Pakistan, the position will assist in planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of external communications and media engagement, crisis communication and advocacy with external stakeholders with Pakistan's Polio Eradication Programme.

How can you make a difference?

  • Provide technical support to the National and Provincial Emergency Operations Centres in support of implementation of respective external communications and advocacy work plans, including production of appropriate media materials such as briefing kits, media releases, drafting speeches, background notes, audio-visual materials and collect story from field.
  • Draft briefing notes on potential international media visits and assist to organise media visits to sites relevant to the Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) in consultation with the provincial media team, especially during polio vaccination campaigns. Draft responses to media queries related to the PEI and coordinate with partners on the sharing of information and updates.
  • Maintain and update Photo and Video Library of the PEI programme with proper captions and related information so that it is accessible to all programme staff.
  • Support implementation of media crisis communication strategy in relation to polio eradication and work with the provincial teams for periodic review and updates, including support to PEI partners to ensure they are well equipped with appropriate tools and materials to respond to, and mitigate, negative media coverage (e.g. Q&As, holding statements, fact sheets, key messages).
  • Manage media monitoring services and ensure timely distribution of news every day including delivery of various reports on media coverage.
  • Provide technical support for the website content development and management and monitor negative propaganda on the Social media platforms through contracting agencies and Social Media Cell of the NEOC.
  • Conceptualize, supervise and ensure quality control of the production of advocacy and communication materials, generation of web and social media contents, events, campaigns etc. in collaboration with the PEI Social Media Team and other relevant actors.
  • Oversee the qualitative aspects of production such as quality control, translation, review of layouts and graphic design.
  • Monitor and evaluate the appropriate and timely dissemination of advocacy and communication materials to target audiences and participate in the evaluation of their impact. Provide feedback on the use and appropriateness of corporate publications and advocacy materials.
  • Participate in Polio Emergency Operations Centers Communication Task team and provide necessary support for organizing periodic meeting on polio programme and other support as required.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have

  • An advanced university degree (Masters or higher) in one of the following fields is required: journalism, communications, public relations or another relevant technical field. *A first University Degree (Bachelor's) in a relevant field combined with 2 additional years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an Advanced University Degree.
  • A minimum of 2 Years (Two years) progressively responsible professional work experience in media/communications at the national or subnational level, with practical experience in media/communication strategy development.
  • Knowledge of the development sector is an asset.

  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Urdu. Knowledge of Pushto or another local language is an asset.

  • This post shall be based in the Polio section, Islamabad, Pakistan Country Office with frequent travels to provinces.
