Intern (Data Analyst and Reporting, DTM REMAP)

Islamabad

Job Description

Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Context

Pakistan, a country that hosts one of the five largest refugee populations worldwide as well as hosting migrant populations, has faced and continues to face complex human mobility and migration dynamics related to natural disasters, crises, development and climate change. Labour migration to and from Pakistan also constitutes an important aspect of mobility in the country. Today over 8,800,000 Pakistanis live abroad, with an estimated 4,000,000 Pakistanis in the Persian Gulf region.[1] The nature of migration in the country poses a challenge not only to actors in the area of migration management but to migrants themselves. These challenges can also be exacerbated by a lack of migration data, which can lead to misperceptions of migration, its impacts and the design of necessary policy and interventions. Understanding data and information gaps, designing supplementary targeted data collection initiatives and ensuring dedicated research and analysis will provide better insights to address these challenges.

The Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) Regional Evidence for Migration Analysis and Policy (REMAP) project was developed in response to the critical need to collect and analyze information on human mobility in, to and from Pakistan and to contribute to evidence-based development programming and to enhance national and regional (migration) policy development. To achieve this, DTM REMAP project aims to establish a comprehensive data collection and analysis infrastructure in Pakistan, as well as work with government agencies/offices, research institutions/individuals, and local, national, and international actors implementing humanitarian and development programing to: (i) improve understanding of the (internal) human mobility and migration dynamics, drivers, modalities and vulnerabilities and (ii) increase national and regional interoperability and harmonization of data collection initiatives.

Core Functions/Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will have the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist in researching and drafting dashboards, flash information sheets, papers and reports describing and analyzing the human mobility of Pakistani and Afghan nationals inside the country and across international borders.
  • Assist in compiling, analyzing and visualizing human mobility data within Pakistan for DTM REMAP reporting purposes.
  • Assist with the development of weekly, monthly and quarterly DTM REMAP products including weekly newsletters, monthly and quarterly project update report compilations and any other reports or info sheets.
  • Assist in and monitor day-to-day policy developments and debates within the partner institutions and organizations and provide information to the DTM REMAP Team accordingly.
  • Aid in the development of relevant information databases and tools including but not limited to the DTM REMAP project, sector related activities, mapping, and software tools.
  • Assist with the management of social media and online web-outlets related to DTM REMAP.
  • Assist in organizing meetings, seminars, workshops and training as needed.
