• Major project experience, ideally large hydro
• Mobile - likely to live in Lahore, but regular meetings at site (5hrs by road)
• Knowledge of heavy civils, hydraulic structures, hydro, underground works, geology
• Good understanding of the operation of civil and E&M contracts would be advantageous but specific experience of the current World Bank contract conditions is not essential.
• Procurement: the first year will be largely pre-qualification, tendering, evaluation and award
• Design: and setting up a design team in Lahore (there is also a design manager role which we also need to source)

An exciting opportunity for secondment work in Pakistan from January 2020 (earliest start) has arisen for a period of circa 12-18 months, as interim Project Manager on the Tarbela 5th extension hydro power project.

Tarbela dam was built in the 1970s and was the world’s largest ever civil engineering project. Mott MacDonald are currently working on completing the 4th Extension and are now commencing the 5th Extension, each phase adding over 1400MW of installed capacity. The 5th Extension scope will also include 50km+ of 500kV transmission line, and also possibly one of the world’s largest floating solar plants (feasibility study currently underway).

Job Profile
The Project Manager is the senior member of the consultant’s staff resident in Pakistan and will be responsible for running the consultant’s offices in Lahore and then on Site. The Project Manager will provide overall leadership of the Consultant’s team and will manage the contractual and organisational issues associated with works with a total value of USD 700 million. The Project Manager will report to the UK based Project Director.

In addition to the day to day management of the project you will be the main point of contact with the client (WAPDA) and all contractors.

You will initially be located in Lahore, but will be required to travel to Islamabad, Tarbela site etc, and will work closely with the current T4 team, to ensure experience and lessons learned on the 4th Extension are carried through into the 5th Extension.

Duties:

• Day to day management of the consultant’s Lahore and site office
• Manage through site teams the interfaces with the Contractors on site
• Health and safety and environmental and social impacts
• Quality and contracts / claims
• Overall responsibility for the organisation of the consultant’s project team
• Report and contribute to reports describing day to day progress and other important project issues
• Organise visits from senior client’s staff and others such as World Bank
• Monitor teams and the independent Panel of Experts
• A good understanding of project scheduling/programming and ability to drive to good solutions (operation of the software not required)

The Project Manager is expected to be able to work without day to day guidance but where possible to discuss issues of significance with the wider team including those offshore.
